Seville develops tool to assess quality of recycled materials
17 Jan 2022
As part of Seville’s work in CityLoops, EMASESA (the city’s water and wastewater public company) has developed a tool for assessing the quality of recycled material in water and sewage infrastructures. The tool can be used to support different sorts of construction processes.
Last year EMASESA included an evaluation criteria in 12 tenders for replacement of water pipes, assessing the company's intentions to use recycled construction material in the construction. Over the course of 2022, the impact of this procurement approach will be monitored. The developed tool will be used to assist in this construction project.
The tool consists of two parts. Firstly, the tool helps to identify the different types of waste that will be generated in a construction project. Getting a better understanding of the volumes, cost and destination of the produced waste allows for better management and control of the generated Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in building projects. In the case of Seville, EMASESA has assessed that non-contaminated materials coming from excavation, waste from construction activities and hazardous waste will be the most common types of CDW.
The second part of the tool provides handling recommendations, focusing on:
- Selective Demolition
- CDW Classification and treatment in a CDW plant
- Production and Quality Control in a CDW treatment plant
- Quality control of materials in the construction work
- Quality control of execution in the construction work
In addition, the tool also provides an overview of the state of the art regarding the use of recycled aggreagate in construction works in Spain. The full tool can be found here.
