Vallès Occidental hosts final CityLoops replication workshop

On 28 and 29 September Vallès Occidental (Spain) organised the final replication workshop of CityLoops. The city joined CityLoops as a replicator, focusing on actions related to circular procurement, urban metabolism, and circular indicators that could help it define a strategic vision for a circular city. Those topics were all on the agenda during the 2-day workshop, featuring presentations by CityLoops partners Rijkswaterstaat, Metabolism of Cities and ICLEI.

The replication workshop also featured breakout sessions on 1) food waste prevention and management, 2) circular construction, and 3) circular procurement, highlighting the CityLoops experiences from Porto (Portugal), Bodø (Norway) and Apeldoorn (the Netherlands). Furthermore, the participants visited a circular market for fruits and vegetables, a biomethanisation and composting plant, the HERCAL circular demolition company with its concrete recycling plant and a logistic center for forest biomass and Leitat Technological Center. The workshop finished with a lunch in a primary school which is part of the project Recooperem, aiming to prevent food waste, especially in schools.

The replication workshop in CityLoops was the final event organised by the project, as it officially ended in September. Of course the project will continue to promote its work, aiming to brings its knowledge, experiences and tools to other cities and regions (in Europe and beyond), to help them implement circular projects and contribute to the circular transition.

To support cities in replicating its activities, CityLoops has produced three handbooks on circular construction, bio-waste, and circular procurement (to be published soon on the CityLoops website). The handbooks aim to provide cities with a comprehensive overview of how the lessons learnt and main insights from the project can be most effectively applied in their own contexts.
